Electric stove element goes to high regardless of setting after being turned counter clockwise?

It doesn't have any mechanism stopping it from being turned counter clockwise but since doing this it has been malfunctioning. Just goes straight to highest setting and stays there. The knob has much more of a firm feel now, as in it feels like it is tighter and not turning as freely. It is only six months old. What has happened?
