I dont get what Adrian said to rose (the last sacrifice by richelle mead)?

I read the last book of the vampire academy series and Adrian says "The contract's null and void, by the way" And rose seem very offended and hurt by it. Like i really don't get what his talking about...Anybody know the answer PLEASE TELL ME. im really confused...lol
